Excessive misalignment between the connecting shafts is one of the most common causes of coupling failure because it imposes loads that exceed the coupling's performance specifications. All flexible couplings are designed to correct one or more deviations and vary in elasticity. It is most important to know the allowable elastic range of the coupling. In addition to the potential for premature coupling failure, remember that any coupling is designed to bend or deform itself when correcting, which can introduce bearing loads. Deviations beyond the corrective range of the coupling can lead to accelerated wear and potential failure of other parts of the system such as bearings. When it is found that the deviation exceeds the allowable range of the coupling, it should first be corrected through the adjustment cycle, and then the appropriate coupling should be selected for connection.
